曲の解釈
この曲は、ポール・サイモンがゴスペルシンガーのクロード・ジェターが作り彼のグループのスワン・シルバートーンズがリリースした曲「Mary Don’t You Weep」の歌詞「私の名を信じるなら、深い水の上の君の架け橋になろう」にインスピレーションを受けてつくりました。
歌詞をみると1コーラス目では、友人が疲れ果て心が折れている時に「心のささえ」になるといっています。
2コーラス目では、友人が経済的に無一文の路上生活者になった時に「心を癒してあげる」といっています。
3コーラス目では、友人の少女に対して、「がんばって進むんだ、そうすれば君は輝き、夢をかなえられる」と励ましています。
自分を失くしてまで、友のことを気遣い守るという歌詞で、ほぼ同年代に発表されたキャロル・キングの「You’ve Got a Friend」もそうですが、人への中傷誹謗がはびこり、思いやりが忘れられてきた現代をみると、これらの曲はとても胸に熱く迫るものがあります。
